Reducing Light Pollution – Municipality of Amsterdam

Amsterdam has one of Europe’s highest levels of over-illumination, increasing the risk of sleep-wake disorders, eye strain, headaches, and other health problems. Light pollution is a significant challenge in Amsterdam, requiring a concerted effort from the government, businesses, and residents to reduce it and preserve the natural beauty of the night sky.

More about the project

Research Questions

1) Where and how can we reduce light pollution in Amsterdam?

2) How does lighting affect the perception of safety?

Methods

We will investigate the correlation between the perception of safety and the brightness of public lighting. We will choose a target neighbourhood, conduct a literature review, interview experts and stakeholders, and perform a pilot project. For the latter, we will either change the brightness of lights within one street or compare different streets with distinct brightness levels. Through surveys with road users, we will assess their perception of safety.

Deliverables

For the first research question, we provide guidelines for the municipality on how and where to reduce public lighting in a specific neighbourhood. We will provide data analysis and insights into the pilot project for the second research question.
