Port of Amsterdam: Biodiversity and floating islands

Adopt an IJ-land / Adopteer een IJ-land

We are creating a plan for the development of a series of floatlands in the port of Amsterdam, to increase ecological and recreational value of the area.

The port of Amsterdam is constantly investigating how industry, shipping and nature can blend together. This vision has resulted in several sustainable land-based initiatives. However, the aquatic environment of the port of Amsterdam is currently not used for sustainable projects. Situated between the IJ and the sluices of IJmuiden, the port receives both fresh water and salt water, which together with intensive shipping and industry gives the water a unique profile. Our goal is to develop a project that can add ecological and recreational value to the harbor without affecting current business.

The port of Amsterdam is constantly investigating how industry, shipping and nature can blend together. Our goal is to develop a project that can add ecological and recreational value to the water of the port, without affecting current businesses.

We are developing floating islands (‘IJ-lands’) which create value both under water and above water. These IJ-lands can provide social functions (e.g. growing crops) and ecological functions (e.g. create habitat for fish, birds or pollinators). Amsterdam residents and companies can adopt an IJ-land and make a collective investment in a green Amsterdam.

This summer, four showcase IJ-lands will be deployed in the Houthaven during Sail 2015. These IJ-lands each have a different lay-out and corresponding function, such as providing habitat for birds, fish, pollinators or providing a place to grow crops. Visitors will be directed to the Adopt an IJ-land website to express their interest in adopting a IJ-land.  With this list of interested parties, we aim to construct a large-scale series of adoptable IJ-lands in the Houthavens in 2016.
